Born to Clarence LaVaughn Franklin and Barbara, on March 25, 1942, Aretha spent her formative years in Memphis. Her mother was a piano player while her father was an itinerant preacher. After some time, the family moved to Detroit, where Aretha and her siblings grew up.
She began her career in 1956 when she signed a contract with J.V.B. Records and released her debut album “Songs of Faith”. Later in 1960, she was signed by Columbia Records and released her first single with Columbia titled “Today I Sing the Blues”. The song became an instant hit, making its way to the “Top 10 Hot Rhythm & Blues Sellers chart”.
