Born in Santa Barbara, California on December 17, 1969, Liddell began his Koei-Kan karate training when he was just 12 years old. At school, he even played football and excelled at the game. However with time, he made up his mind to focus only on wrestling where he performed better. After completing his schooling he got enrolled in California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he became Division I wrestler. Finally, he began his professional career in 1998.
