Carey began his acting career in the movies with the 1993 film “Coneheads”. At first, he got a small role of a taxi passenger. Then he appeared on a short-lived sitcom on NBC along with John Caponera. However the show “The Good Life” was canceled after a couple of episodes. Thereafter Carey was hired by Bruce Helford, a writer on the previous show, as a consultant for his next show which was titled “Someone Like Me”.
After working together, Helford and Carey came up with their new television show “The Drew Carey Show”. This indeed was a breakthrough for Drew as it gained him his new audience and fan following. The show focused on a fictional version of Drew himself, stressing on his work and life.
At first, Carey was being paid $60,000 per episode. Soon he renegotiated for $300,000. However seeing the popularity of the show, for the final season, he was being paid $750,000 per episode. During the earlier seasons, the show had a high rating, with good profits. Towards the final season, the production cost skyrocketed to $3 million per episode, which eventually led to the cancellation.
Over the subsequent years, he appeared in numerous movies and music videos as well.
