Born on August 19, 1970, Fat Joe (Joseph Antonio Cartagena) grew up in the South Bronx area of New York City. However, from an early strat, he experienced a tough life, as the family struggled with finances. This made Cartagena steal goods in order to support his family. His parents were of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent and thus being a latino, he often faced racism. It even made him a bully in school however he later changed when he found his new passion, which was music. Inspired by fellow Latino rapper Big Pun, he started rapping as a teenager and over the years perfected his craft. After all, music was one of the few ways to escape the hardships of life.
During the initial years, he joined the rap group D.I.T.C., under the stage name, Fat Joe da Gangsta. Fat Joe released his debut studio album, “Represent” on July 27, 1993. The album peaked at number 82 on the Billboard 100 and received mixed reviews. Later he released 9 other studio albums, the recent one being “The Darkside Vol. 1”, which was released back in 2010.
Apart from his music, the rapper even appeared on a couple of movies like “Scary Movie 3 (2003)” and Happy Feet (2006).
Currently, he resides in his Miami mansion along wth his three kids.

The rapper faced a legal issue when he failed to pay taxes in between 2007 and 2010. He pleaded guilty to tax evasion in 2012 and was later sentenced to four months in prison. The issue could have landed him in prison for 2 years with a fine up to $200,000. He had reportedly earned $ 3.3 million in between that duration.
