Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Kid Cudi comes from an African-American and Mexican descent. His father, Lindberg Styles Mescudi, worked as an Air Force veteran and a painter, while his mother  Elsie Harriet was a school teacher. Cudi grew up in Shaker Heights and Solon along with his three other siblings. He attended Solon High School for a couple of years, as later he threatened to punch the principal, which led to his expulsion.

For higher education, he attended the University of Toledo, however soon he dropped out in order to focus on his career. At first, he wanted to join the US Navy however later as he was not recruited he opted for a music career.
