Born to Sonja Bates-Norwood and Willie Norwood, on January 17, 1981, Ray spent his childhood in Los Angeles. At first, the family lived in Mississippi however, later they moved to California. Showing interest in music from a young age, Ray began his professional career in 1989, while appearing on television commercials. He gained initial fame after appearing on a TV show titled “The Sinbad Show”. Ray worked on the project from 1993 to 1994,as after that his career in music began once he was signed by “Elektra Records”.

Over the subsequent years, his career gained momentum and thus, he worked with major artists including Diplo, Brandy, Gucci Mane, Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, and Pitbull.
