Son of William James Edward Lee III, an artist and Jacqueline Carroll, a teacher, Lee grew up in Brooklyn, New York. In his formative years, he went to John Dewey High School, while later he attended Morehouse College. He even received Master of Fine Arts from Tisch School of the Arts.
Along with his wife, attorney Tonya Lewis, Spike has two children. His daughter, Satchel was born in 1994 while in 1997 the couple was blessed with a boy whom they named Jackson.
